Active Recall vs Spaced Repetition: What Is the Difference?

They are not competing techniques. Active recall is the effort of producing an answer from memory; spaced repetition is the decision to bring that material back after a delay. One controls the action, the other controls the timing.

The difference in one minute

  • Active recall asks: can you produce the answer without looking?
  • Spaced repetition asks: when should you attempt that answer again?
  • Together: retrieve, check, record difficulty and return after an appropriate delay.

What active recall looks like

Close the source and answer a flashcard, write everything you remember about a process, explain a concept aloud or complete a practice question before checking the solution. The important feature is retrieval: the answer must come from memory, not from recognising highlighted text.

A card is not automatically active recall. Flipping it immediately, reading both sides together or deciding “I knew that” after seeing the answer removes the retrieval attempt.

What spaced repetition looks like

Revisit material across separate sessions rather than repeating it continuously in one sitting. Easier items can return after longer gaps; difficult or incomplete answers should return sooner. There is no single perfect sequence for every subject, learner and exam date, so treat schedules as starting points rather than universal rules.

A simple combined routine

  1. Choose a small topic and create precise questions.
  2. Answer each question before revealing the back.
  3. Check against the trusted source and correct incomplete reasoning.
  4. Review difficult items soon; delay items you can explain accurately.
  5. Mix in full exam questions so isolated facts transfer to the assessment.

Which one matters more?

If you must improve one weak session today, begin with active recall: stop rereading and attempt answers. For retention across weeks or months, add spacing so the same ideas remain retrievable. Spacing passive rereading is not the same as spacing retrieval practice.

What if the exam is very close?

You may have fewer opportunities to space reviews, but retrieval and feedback still matter. Prioritise high-value topics, test them now, correct mistakes and revisit the weakest material later the same day or the next day. Do not spend the remaining time building a perfect schedule you cannot complete.

Common mistakes

  • Reviewing every card at the same frequency regardless of difficulty.
  • Counting recognition as a correct answer.
  • Using flashcards for skills that require full calculations, essays or practical work.
  • Adding new cards faster than the review queue can be completed.
  • Continuing to review an inaccurate or ambiguous card instead of fixing it.

Start with the good-flashcard checklist, or turn a focused section of your notes into an editable deck. Then use retrieval and delayed review as part of a broader exam plan.
