The efficient revision loop
Use the same four-stage loop for every topic: map, retrieve, check, schedule. It keeps planning short and makes most of the session an attempt to use knowledge rather than look at it.
1. Map the syllabus before making notes
List the examinable topics from the current syllabus or course outline. Mark each one as untested, secure or weak. This becomes your revision map. A beautiful set of notes is not useful if it covers the wrong specification.
For each topic, write one outcome you must be able to demonstrate: explain a process, apply a formula, compare two ideas, interpret evidence or recall a definition.
2. Start with a closed-book attempt
Before reviewing the topic, spend five to ten minutes writing what you can recall or answering a few questions without notes. Retrieval practice gives you evidence about what is available from memory. Familiarity while reading is not the same as being able to produce an answer in an exam.
3. Check against a trusted source
Compare the attempt with the syllabus, textbook, lecture notes or marking guidance. Correct errors in a different colour and record only the missing idea. Do not rewrite the whole chapter.
4. Convert gaps into answerable questions
Turn each important gap into a question with one clear target. “Explain why increasing temperature changes reaction rate” is more useful than “Reaction rates”. Keep answers short enough to check, then use worked problems or past-paper questions for skills that cannot be tested with a simple card.
You can turn your trusted material into an editable Knowyio deck, but review every generated card before relying on it.
5. Schedule the next attempt
Return to the question after a delay. The useful interval depends on difficulty, prior knowledge and how long remains before the exam, so treat any fixed timetable as a starting point. A simple early schedule is next day, later in the week and again the following week, shortening the gap when recall fails.
A 60-minute revision session
- 5 minutes: choose one outcome from the syllabus map.
- 15 minutes: attempt recall or exam questions without notes.
- 15 minutes: check, correct and identify the reason for each error.
- 15 minutes: practise the weak part with new questions.
- 10 minutes: schedule the next review and test two older topics.
What to stop doing
- Rewriting complete notes when only two ideas are missing.
- Spending the whole session highlighting or organising files.
- Studying only favourite topics.
- Waiting until you feel ready before attempting questions.
- Using the same method for facts, calculations and essays.
How to know whether the system is working
Track observable outcomes: questions answered correctly without help, repeated misconceptions, time taken and whether the same error returns after a delay. The goal is not hours completed. It is fewer important gaps each time you test yourself.
