How to Make Useful Flashcards from Notes or a PDF

Start with the exam outcome

Before converting anything, check the current syllabus, learning objectives or assessment criteria. Mark definitions, processes, comparisons, formulas, diagrams and common applications. Skip decorative examples and repeated explanations unless they help answer a likely question.

Prepare a clean source section

Work on one topic at a time. For a PDF, confirm that the text can be selected; scanned pages may need OCR before extraction. Remove irrelevant cover pages and repeated headers. Keep equations, tables and diagrams beside the explanation they belong to so the generated questions do not lose context.

Turn each target into one answerable prompt

• Ask one main thing per card.
• Name the context: subject, process, case or unit.
• Use prompts such as “explain,” “compare,” “calculate” or “predict” when the exam requires more than a definition.
• Keep the answer short enough to check, but not so short that it becomes ambiguous.
• Use image or diagram questions when spatial information matters.

Use AI as a draft, not a source

An AI generator can quickly propose questions from material you supply, but it can omit conditions, simplify an equation incorrectly or invent an answer when the source is unclear. Compare every card with the original notes and the current official specification. Edit weak wording before saving the deck.

Remove cards that create false confidence

Delete duplicates, vague topic labels and prompts that reveal the answer in their wording. Split cards that contain several unrelated questions. If a skill requires working through a calculation, essay plan or source evaluation, use the card to cue the practice task instead of pretending a short answer is enough.

Test a small batch before generating more

1. Create 10 to 20 cards for one topic.
2. Attempt every answer before revealing it.
3. Correct unclear cards and record missing ideas.
4. Review the difficult cards after a delay.
5. Add another topic only if the review queue remains manageable.

• Every card maps to a real learning objective.
• The source and specification are current.
• Questions make sense without accidental clues.
• Answers preserve units, conditions and essential exceptions.
