Start with the specification, not the textbook order
Use the current specification for your exam board as a checklist. Mark each statement red, amber or green, then choose one red statement for the next session. A topic is not green because it looks familiar: you should be able to explain it with the notes closed and answer an exam question on it.
Separate chemistry tasks by skill
- Recall: definitions, tests, observations, conditions and formulae.
- Representation: word equations, symbol equations, ionic equations and particle diagrams.
- Calculation: relative masses, moles, concentration, gas volume and percentage yield where required by your syllabus.
- Explanation: link particle behaviour, bonding, energy or collision ideas to the observation in the question.
- Practical reasoning: identify variables, controls, hazards, measurements and improvements.
Do not spend the whole session on only one skill. A useful 45-minute block might contain ten minutes of recall, twenty minutes of calculation or explanation questions and fifteen minutes of marking and correction.
How to improve chemistry calculations
Write the known values, choose the relationship, substitute with units and check whether the result is reasonable. When a calculation is wrong, record the exact failure: wrong formula, incorrect ratio, unit conversion or arithmetic. Redo a similar question two or three days later without copying the worked solution.
Learn experiments as decisions
Instead of memorising one long method, ask a sequence of questions: what is changed, what is measured, what must be controlled, what makes the test fair, and what result would support the conclusion? This makes it easier to adapt when the exam changes the apparatus or context.
A three-stage revision sequence
- Repair gaps: learn one specification point and complete topic questions immediately.
- Mix topics: combine calculations, definitions and explanations so that you must identify the method yourself.
- Rehearse: complete timed papers, mark strictly and spend as much care correcting errors as answering questions.
Use flashcards selectively
Flashcards work well for ion tests, gas tests, definitions, conditions and short cause-and-effect chains. They should not replace calculation practice or extended explanations.
